ST
NICHOLAS FOOTBALL CLUB HOUSE – HOW IT STARTED!
St Nicholas football club was founded in 1974 to provide football in the
Yate and Chipping Sodbury areas for boys from the ages of nine to eighteen
years old. The club now runs over 17 teams including 5 girls teams (2007/08
season)!. In 1979 it was officially named 'St Nicholas Youth Football
Club.
The first club house resembled a barn! It had a tin roof and was not the
ideal place for football venues. It was decided that a new clubhouse was
very much needed, so with donations from St Nicholas members work began
in 1992 to start the project.
AJ Builders were commissioned to lay the main foundations. Andy Nelson
and John Smith worked like Trojans over a 2 month period to get
the main shell completed.
The next phase was the erection of the trusses and supports which was
to support over 2,500 tiles! Then in came the volunteers who worked mostly
on this project at weekends, these were: Andy Nelson, Mik Jankovic,
Pete Amos, Bob Rogers, Nick Rhodes, Colin Rundle and several other
members who helped on occasions.
Progress was steady and the work was completed by the end of 1993.
The club house that we all use today would not have been built had it
not been for these members believing in the good of our football community.
St Nicholas still has dedicated members who have given tirelessly to keeping
St Nicholas the community club it is today.
We are always looking for people with building, carpentry, electrical,
plumbing experience to volunteer any spare time they have if the need
arose!
We are even thinking of ‘sprucing’ up the club house on a
specific date, if you are interested in volunteering your services, please
contact :- Brian Tuckfield on 01454 880416.
PS.
We are in the process of scanning in lots of old photographs of the club
house to accompany this story.
